Upcyled Spray Paint Vases

Published by Penelope Quinn on January 21, 2023

Walk into any thrift shop and you’ll likely see dozens of unloved vases just crying out for a new lease of life!

Spray paint is an easy and effective way to upcycle almost any nick nack – you’ll be amazed how a dated ornament can be completely transformed with just a few coats of paint.

Don’t stop at vases, once you’ve got the hang of it, get creative with ornaments and photo frames too!

What You Need:

Vases in various sizes
White spray paint
Another colour of your choosing
Old newspaper to protect surfaces

Clean and dry all surfaces that you will spray paint. Make sure you are in a well ventilated area, and lay down some newspaper to protect surfaces.

Start by spraying a very light coat in white in short bursts, holding your spray can about 15cm away from the vase. Let dry ten minutes. Repeat this process until you have an even, opaque finish. Remember, it’s better to do three or four very light coats then one heavy coat to avoid drips!

Once are happy with the finish, turn your vases upside down. Unlike the first coat of paint, we are going to apply this spray paint very thick and erratic!

Experiment on scrap paper, you want splatters, splashes and drips. I found holding the nozzle down half way and spraying very close to the surface produced interesting results. Start spraying from the base of vase and work your way up. Let dry for at least an hour.

You’re done!
