How to Make a Pom Pom Wreath

Published by Penelope Quinn on April 28, 2018

This super fun pom pom wreath is a colourful addition to any front door, any time of year!

The trick to making these work is the addition of mesh ribbon – this will help make sure that your pom poms stick firm to your wreath and won’t fall off – which sometimes happens if you glue straight onto foam. This is a wonderful craft to make with children – and personalise with embellishments such as bells, baubles, ribbons and tassels to make it truly one of a kind.

What you need:

  • A foam or steel wreath
  • Hessian ribbon around 7cm thick and 1 metre long
  • 4 or more colours of wool
  • Pom pom makers in three sizes
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors

How To Make a Pom Pom wreath

1. First you’ll need to make around 20 – 30 pom poms, depending on the size of your wreath. I used around 35 pom poms for 20cm wide wreath. Create lots of interest with different sizes and colours. There are lots of great pom pom makers on the market that will help speed up the process! If you are making a large wreath, you could also buy some pre made felt pom poms to act as filler

2.Next you’ll need to wrap the hessian ribbon around the wreath. This will help the pom poms stick firmly if you are using a foam wreath, and a base if you decide to use a metal wreath. Use a hot glue gun to start, and wrap quite firmly, using more glue as you need to make sure it sits flush to the wreath. Once you’re done, trim the end.

  1. Start gluing down your pom poms, starting with the biggest and filling the gaps with the smaller pom poms. If you like, you can add extra embellishments – I added some small bells and tassels.
