Creepy Cool DIY Halloween Decorations

Published by Penelope Quinn on October 10, 2015

If you’re going to throw a Halloween party, it won’t do to hang up a few streamers – half the fun is crafting some suitably scary decorations!

Dollar stores are full of that plasticy, cheap looking crap but if you want a real creepy yet cool shindig that will be remembered long after you’ve found the last remains of synthetic cobweb, put some ingenuity into creating a few wow pieces. You can always fill the gaps with aforementioned tacky decorations and some well-placed lighting.

I created these four ideas in a day for Studio TEN’s Halloween episode and while it took a bit of planning and running around to get all the materials, they were ridiculously easy to put together, but created serious impact!!

Pineapple Jack-o-lantern

It’s no secret my love for the pineapple, so I couldn’t help myself but sneak a few of these in.

A few tips – once you’ve scooped out the inside, dry the pineapple well – even leave it an hour or two if you can. It will be easier to carve.

Eyeball flowers

I still have these flowers sitting in a vase in my craft room! They would be the perfect unexpected touch for a Halloween party.

Use a styrofoam ball, and simply draw on your eyes with markers. Spray paint your plastic flowers (my flowers were purple so I let a bit show through) then once dry, I glued on the styrofoam balls.

Electric Drill Pumpkin Carving

I actually did attempt to carve a pumpkin the old fashioned way and failed miserably – no one told me that it’s actually bloody hard to carve a pumpkin. But once I fired up the electric drill, all I had to worry about was cleaning all the pumpkin out before my flatmate came home and discovered I was using his beloved drill to massacre a large vegetable.

Tip: If you’re going to spray paint, do it after you’ve drilled otherwise you’ll end up with black paint all over you!

Spooky spectre

You’ll need some coat hangers, one of those horrid masks you find in dollar shops and about five metres mosquito netting and a good place to hang it to create this spooky spectre. I found the hardest part was trying to twist the coat hangers together to create the form underneath – so make sure you have a pair of sturdy pliers handy!

Even though I’ve never had a Halloween party, I’ve been hoarding ideas like I one day will – you can check them out on Pinterest

Happy Halloweening!
